WINTER SKIN: The Do's

And just like that, winter has arrived! Well in some form for many of us! For example, in the Houston TX area you could potentially experience all seasons in a single day. Nonetheless our skin will respond to the environmental changes. You should change up your skincare and makeup like you change up your clothing. Let's discuss!

Skin becomes more dry during the cooler months due to the lack of moisture in the air, so we need to balance our skin's water content with the right products.

Do:

  • Protect your skin and lips with SPF during the day. Just because you are not under the hot summer sun does not mean those rays aren't there. For the face my go-to is Elta MD tinted moisturizer and for lips Aquaphor Lip Protect.

  • Care for those lips, especially at night. The day time lip protection is typically wax based. Use a wax-free lip care product right before bed. You'll thank me later. Try Melixir Vegan Lip Butter is amazing!

  • Use cream/oil based cleansers. Choose a more gentler, rich, creamy, or oil cleanser for daily use. Less foaming, means less surfactants. Currently I am in love with Neutrogena Micellar Cleansing Milk .

  • Opt for cream or liquid based makeup products ie BB/CC cream and cream blush. Check out IT Cosmetics CC Cream and Purlisse Blush Glow.

  • Choose hydrating/moisturizing nighttime products and hydrating treatment masks. Searching for key words like creams, barrier repair, overnight recovery, etc. Love La Roche products in general, their Ultra Night Facial or CeraVe Skin Renewing Cream.

  • Select a chemical exfoliation process over manual exfoliation. Many people like to use manual because you can physically feel those scrubbers on your face, but decrease your chance of over exfoliating by choosing a chemical, scrub-free approach. Check for products like enzyme masks, glycolic acid or AHA and BHA toner treatments. If you have sensitive skin a good rule of thumb for your processing time is to do less than the directions and then work your way up as you feel your skin can handle it. The liquid solutions you can always put water on your cotton round first, then add the solution and squeeze out excess. This does a slight dilution! Again, diluting or decreasing your processing time is a safe way for our sensitive-skinned people (like me). Paula's Choice Liquid exfoliant or the Ordinary Lactic Acid are my go-to's!
